Starting Over in a New Career
Neil Walton spent 10 years as a hospitality photographer in Dubai. When his wife's career took the family bouncing between four countries in five years, he realized location-dependent photography wasn't going to work anymore.
“I thought, well, how do I do a digital career change so I'm location free, can charge a little bit extra, project-based work? I've always built my own websites, and I really enjoyed designing and that creative flow.”
So Neil pivoted to web design. But there was one major problem. When he joined Clients by Design, he had zero design clients. Not a slow start. Literally zero.
“Up until coming into your program, not one client with design work. I'd been doing the cold reach outs, posting my work, contacting people, building relationships. And in cold circumstances, no one wants to do that.”
He'd even tried another coaching program first. He put his head down, followed their system, and it didn't work. The world had changed since his early freelancing days when cold calls and emails worked effortlessly.
Finding the Right Niche on the Second Try
Neil's path through the program wasn't a straight line. He started with one niche, realized it wasn't the right fit, and had to pivot partway through. That meant redoing the foundational work, including his positioning, his portfolio, and his messaging.
The program's ROI guarantee kicked in during this period, pausing his monthly payments while they figured out the new direction. That took the pressure off without losing the support.
“That was great. It took the pressure off, obviously, not having to pay the monthly charge. But you were still there. Still helping out.”
Neil used the downtime to do direct outreach to photographers, built case studies in his new niche, and then launched ads.
Ads That Worked Immediately
When the ads finally went live for the new niche, they started working right away. Neil almost couldn't believe it.
“In Brian's playbook for that, he's like, 'Yeah, your first ads are going to suck. You're going to question everything. Don't worry about it.' Man, maybe I cracked it.”
He did make one mistake along the way, turning off an ad set and starting a new campaign, which confused Facebook's algorithm. But his coach caught it quickly, they corrected course, and the leads started flowing again.
“And then it's just been call after call after call.”
The biggest thing Neil learned was the psychology of sales. He'd known how to sell, but having the process broken down step by step made everything click.
“Someone put into the chat the seven psychological triggers of sales, and then I read that and all of a sudden, it just clicked. Now I understand why this is laid out this way.”
The Numbers
The results from zero clients in a brand-new career:
• Before: Zero design clients. Cold outreach wasn't working in the modern landscape
• After: Six to seven clients closed, with consistent deal flow
• Revenue: $30,000 and climbing
• Total ad spend: Approximately $1,500
• ROI: Around 25x return on ad spend
• Monthly revenue: Averaging $10,000 per month
• System confidence: Knows how to run ads, structure offers, and close sales independently
“It's actually not complicated once you understand it. Once you get it, you can make an advert for almost anything.”
Neil is now considering adding a coaching service for photographers and videographers, having spotted a pattern on his sales calls where creatives face the exact same business challenges.
A Happy Household
After 20 years of working for himself across different ventures and countries, Neil finally has the financial contribution to match his ambition.
“When someone pays you, and it hits your account, that is one of the best things you can ever do for yourself. Somehow it's different when you work for yourself. When you're getting one, two, three, four, five payments per month, it feels really good.”
The pressure at home has lifted. His wife no longer has to carry the weight. And his goals are big. He wants to scale to mid-to-high six figures, retire his wife, and build real long-term security.
“The wife doesn't have to support me so much. At least I'm supporting myself, and now we've got a combined salary. I live in a very happy household now.”
"Just look at the ROI, and have a look at the testimonials. If that doesn't convince you, especially with the ROI guarantee, then maybe it's not for you. Just go for it."— Neil Walton,
